AMD prices are dropping like a stone, which seemingly never reaches the bottom of the pit. AMD is offering three different types of CPU's: the high-end AMD Athlon Thunderbird, the Athlon Classic, and the Duron. The Athlon Classic is the older and slower version of the Athlon (1/2 - 1/3 speed 512KB L2 cache), and is slowly disappearing. This CPU should only be your choice of you own a Slot-A board, and for $170 you can buy the 900MHz model.
The newer AMD Athlons that use the Thunderbird core and the low cost Duron CPU's both come in the Socket-A package format, so upgrading becomes a lot less messy. The fastest 1.2GHz Thunderbird is priced at a relatively competitive $492, which is about the price of Intel's 1GHz PIII. For just $251, the 1.0GHz Thunderbird becomes a very good upgrade alternative as it is the cheapest 1.0GHz CPU on the market.
The best AMD buys this week are the 750MHz ($104) and 900MHz ($161) parts. Durons are dropping in price as well, $60 for the 700Mhz model is very attractive, not even considering the overclocking potential.
