Desktop CPU Comparison - September 99

The Test
With four different interface requirements (Slot-1, Socket-370, Slot-A, Super Socket-7) included in this comparison, leveling the playing field was a somewhat difficult task however it was accomplished to the best of our abilities nevertheless. All Socket-370 CPUs were run using a Socket-370 to Slot-1 adapter card, therefore eliminating any differences between motherboards in the benchmarks comparing Socket-370 and Slot-1 processors. Since the test hard drive was the IBM Deskstar 22GXP, a Ultra ATA 66 HDD, and the AMD 750 chipset used on all Athlon boards natively supports Ultra ATA 66, the Promise Ultra 66 adapter card was used in all test systems without native support for Ultra ATA 66 in order to further level the playing field.
